Phoenix Food Court Mural
University of California, Irvine – Food Court Area, between the Social Sciences and Engineering Schools.
Objective:
The goal of this mural is to visually represent the intersection and synergy between UCI's Social Sciences and Engineering schools, embodying both fields' collaborative and innovative spirit. The mural will serve as an emblem of university pride, connecting students, faculty, and staff from different disciplines while reinforcing UCI’s brand identity.
The mural should inspire a sense of unity, pride, and ambition, celebrating UCI’s commitment to knowledge, diversity, and forward-thinking. It should invite reflection on the ways these two disciplines intersect, whether through technology-driven social solutions or the human impact of engineering innovation.
Target Audience:
Primary: Current UCI students, faculty, and staff, especially those in or connected to the Social Sciences and Engineering Schools.
Secondary: Visitors, prospective students, and alumni who engage with the university environment, strengthening their sense of belonging and pride in the institution.
Brand Voice, Tone, and Character:
Innovative & Forward-Thinking: Reflect UCI’s reputation as a leader in research and education, emphasizing cutting-edge ideas, creativity, and discovery.
Inclusive & Collaborative: Highlight UCI’s commitment to diversity, collaboration, and interdisciplinary learning.
Community-Oriented: Emphasize the spirit of unity, both within the university and between the diverse academic disciplines.
Key Themes & Visual Direction:
Unity & Connection: Incorporate abstract or literal elements that symbolically link the fields of Social Sciences and Engineering. Consider representing these disciplines as complementary forces working toward common goals, such as solving global challenges.
Innovation & Discovery: Use dynamic, modern visuals—think of imagery that reflects research, exploration, and problem-solving. Consider incorporating mathematical and scientific patterns alongside human figures, social dynamics, and cultural motifs.
UCI Pride: The UCI brand should be subtly reflected, through color (UCI blue and gold), typography, or recognizable campus symbols, to ensure the mural resonates with the identity of the university.
Engagement & Interaction: Aim for a design that encourages viewers to engage with the mural—whether through interactive elements, visual storytelling, or thought-provoking imagery.
By merging the intellectual rigor of Social Sciences with the technical prowess of Engineering, the mural will stand as a symbol of UCI’s commitment to pushing boundaries—scientifically, socially, and culturally—while fostering a strong sense of belonging and pride among its campus community.
